Steamboat's Mountain Bike Guide: Where to Ride, Where to Live

Lifestyle Nicole Montgomery August 14, 2026

Mountain biking season is in full swing in Steamboat Springs, as the hot summer days slowly transition to the cooler days of fall. Soon, Mt. Werner and Emerald Mountain will be lined with gold aspens, as the trails turn fast and tacky after the late-summer rainfall. Fall is peak season for mountain biking in Steamboat Springs, and the terrain is varied, from the lift-served bike park at the resort to the downtown trail system on Emerald Mountain, and miles of backcountry singletrack up the Elk River Valley. Wherever the trails take you, home is never far away. Below we highlight some of the best biking in town, and the homes that put you within moments of

The Ski Resort: Lift-Served Trails

Steamboat Bike Park offers more than 2,200 vertical feet of lift-served, gravity-fed downhill terrain, with cross-country trails spanning the broader resort for riders who'd rather climb than catch a lift. The gondola runs all summer, hauling bikes and riders, and the trail network mixes flow trails, technical lines, and beginner-friendly runs across the mountain's lower and upper sections.

2357 Poma Lane | Set at the end of a private cul-de-sac, this five-bedroom residence is a six-minute walk (or quick ride) from the Steamboat trails, with the gondola passing directly overhead on arrival. Soaring wood-beamed ceilings, a chef's kitchen with Thermador appliances, and a lower level built for entertaining make the home as functional for a full house of riders as it is for a quiet weekend. Located in Steamboat's short-term rental Green Zone with no HOA fees. Represented by Chris Paoli.

2408 Chutes Lane | Completed in 2024 and designed by architect Frank Becker, this ski-in/ski-out residence sits close enough to the lifts to make a lap before breakfast. Five ensuite bedrooms, a custom bunk room, and multiple terraces with mountain views give it the layout of a basecamp built for groups. Deeded access to Bear Claw amenities adds a pool and fitness center to the mix after a long day on the bike park. Represented by Chris Paoli.

1462 Clubhouse Drive | Less than a mile from Steamboat Ski Area and sitting directly on the free city bus route, this four-bedroom mountain retreat offers quick access to the mountain and miles of trails. The lower level's media and game space, plus two primary suites, make it a natural fit for a group splitting time between the bike park and Emerald Mountain. Represented by Kenny Reisman.

The Vantage at Village Drive | Three blocks from the Steamboat Ski Area base, these new-construction townhomes put riders within walking distance of the gondola and the trailheads surrounding it. Rooftop terraces, heated garages, and radiant floor heat cover the after-ride comforts, while the lock-and-leave layout suits owners who want mountain access without upkeep. Represented by Justin Read and Chris Paoli

2440 Ski Trail Lane B | Positioned directly on the Stampede ski run at the midpoint of the Christie lift, this five-bedroom home is one of only four residences in its slopeside enclave. Timber-framed ceilings and a deck that opens straight to the mountain make it as much a summer basecamp as a winter one, with meaningful short-term rental potential for owners who want the option. Represented by Justin Read and Chris Paoli

In Town: Emerald Mountain and Spring Creek

Emerald Mountain offers the most accessible trail system in Steamboat, with a trailhead within walking distance of downtown and a network that includes a downhill-only bike trail alongside cross-country singletrack. Nearby, Spring Creek Trail extends the riding further into the hills and up to Buff Pass for those who want more mileage from the heart of town.

608 Yampa 202 | One of only four custom residences in a boutique building overlooking the Yampa River, this downtown condominium puts owners steps from biking and hiking on Emerald Mountain, and fishing along the river corridor, with views spanning from the Steamboat Resort to Howelsen Hill. The location threads the needle between in-town walkability and open trail access. Represented by Chris Paoli.

512 8th Street | The final remaining residence in a boutique collection of three new-construction homes on one of downtown's most desirable residential streets, this five-bedroom property sits within moments of downtown restaurants, shops, and trail access. A detached ADU above the garage adds flexibility for guests or rental income, and the gated entry gives the home a clear sense of arrival on a walkable block. Represented by Jessica Stanford and Chris Paoli.

Basecamp Row | A limited collection of new modern townhomes on Steamboat's west side, built for riders who want their gear as close as their front door. Orange Peel Bikes anchors the on-site retail, and the neighborhood sits minutes from Emerald Mountain's trail network and the free city bus to the ski area. Rooftop terraces and private garages complete the lock-and-leave setup.

Represented by Jessica Stanford and Chris Paoli.

601 Lincoln Ave R1A | A sunlit, one-bedroom corner residence at Alpenglow Lofts, within easy reach of Steamboat's restaurants, the Yampa River, and the Emerald Mountain trailhead, with a short free city bus ride to the ski area. The unit is deed-restricted for occupants who work in Routt County or meet the local income threshold, making it a fit for buyers seeking employee housing, family members working locally, or anyone drawn to a low-maintenance downtown base near the trails. Represented by Amy Brown and Chris Sias

The Elk River Valley: Mad Creek, Red Dirt, and the Hot Springs Trail

North of town along Elk River Road, the Mad Creek trailhead anchors a backcountry trail system that includes the Mad Creek Trail, the Red Dirt Trail, and the Hot Springs Trail, a three-mile ride that leads directly to Strawberry Park Hot Springs. It's a different kind of riding than the resort or Emerald: more remote, more technical in sections, and often the first terrain to dry out in early season. This is also close to Marabou Ranch territory, where ownership comes with a private trail system built into the amenity package, and access to the trails above close to home.

26575 Barn Owl Place | A custom-built architectural estate within the gates of Marabou Ranch, positioned on six private acres with direct views of the Elk River, Sleeping Giant, and the Flat Tops. Ownership includes access to more than 20 miles of trails within the ranch's private 1,700-plus acres, along with equestrian facilities, fly fishing on the Elk River, and a private ski lounge at the base of Steamboat Resort. Represented by Chris Paoli.

42375 River Drum Trail | A legacy home on 6.78 acres within Marabou Ranch, built with reclaimed wood, stone, and steel to sit quietly in its surroundings. Six bedrooms across the main house and a detached guest house make it suited to multi-generational use, with the same private trail network, fly fishing, and ranch amenities available to every Marabou owner. Represented by Chris Paoli.

27000 Fire Song Road | A 6.67-acre homesite within Marabou Ranch, one of the few lots in the community approved for an accessory dwelling unit. Utilities are already extended to the lot line, and ownership includes access to the ranch's extensive trail network along with its Master Guide Program, which connects owners with professional guides across fly fishing, horseback riding, and biking. Represented by Chris Paoli.

41325 River Vision Way | A 6.13-acre homesite within the gates of Marabou Ranch, positioned near the community entrance for easy access to downtown, with sweeping views toward Sleeping Giant. The lot is ready for a custom multi-generational build, with the same private trail network, Elk River fly fishing, and Master Guide Program access shared across Marabou Ranch, plus use of the ranch's guest cabins while building plans take shape. Represented by Chris Paoli.
