Summer on the Water: Lakes Near Steamboat Springs and the Properties Within Close Reach

Lifestyle Nicole Montgomery May 28, 2026

Steamboat Springs earns its winter reputation every year, but summer tells a different story, and much of it revolves around the water. Within roughly 30 miles of downtown, the region holds six distinct lakes and reservoirs, from private, members-only club lakehouses to full-service state parks open for wake sports, and quieter backcountry water limited to paddles and fly rods. Each has its own character. The wildflower meadows come up around the shorelines, the trout are plentiful, and the paddleboards are out by June.

Below is a guide to the lakes that define the Steamboat summer, alongside current listings positioned close to each one.

What Lakes Are Near Steamboat Springs?

The region is home to several primary water destinations within close reach of town, including Lake Catamount, Stagecoach Reservoir, Steamboat Lake, Pearl Lake, Dumont Lake, Hahn’s Peak, and Elkhead Reservoir. Each serves a different type of water recreation and buyer lifestyle.

Lake Catamount is a private 530-acre reservoir south of Steamboat Springs, accessible exclusively to members and guests of Catamount Ranch & Club. Members can use kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, laser sailboats, and a pontoon boat at no additional charge. Water skiing is also available with instruction for adults and children. Fishing for stocked rainbow trout does not require a Colorado state fishing license, as the lake sits on private property. In winter, the surrounding terrain becomes a hub for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat biking through the Catamount Outdoor Family Center.
